HHRC Statement On New Zealand Mosque Shootings

AUGUSTA, Maine – Mass shootings at two mosques in New Zealand have struck fear in Muslim communities all around the world, including here in Maine. The Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine’s Executive Director Shenna Bellows released the following statement in response:

“Our hearts go out to the families of those who lost loved ones in the New Zealand mosque shootings and to our Muslim friends and neighbors here in Maine who fear for their lives in these turbulent times. Here in Maine, we must do our part to make sure our Muslim neighbors and people of all faiths can worship in peace, be welcomed in their communities and safe in their homes and schools.

“Having worked to confront prejudice and discrimination in schools for over thirty years, the HHRC will continue to engage with schools and teachers to make sure they have the resources they need to support our Muslim students and promote inclusion and equity.”
