Rent Space in the Michael Klahr Center

The beautiful Michael Klahr Center is architecturally and historically significant. In 2005 the Board of Directors decided it was time to build a home for their non-profit. They put out a call for proposals from architects, and to their surprise received over 200 submissions from around the world. They chose the design created by Harold Hon and Son Wooten, young architects at the Boston-based firm Shepley Bulfinch, who envisioned a cylindrical, permanent exhibit space at the center of the building that would preserve the stories of Holocaust survivors for future generations. From that space four light-filled, flower-like petals would rise around that central focal point, creating a dramatic feeling of lifting up from within, metaphorically invoking the rebirth of human rights, freedom, and democracy after World War II.

The cultural center has a dramatic entrance, a two-story, glass atrium for gathering and reflecting, a round amphitheater for performances and presentations, a large room for classes, and an art gallery to curate rotating exhibits. The center welcomes visitors year-round, as well as classes, community groups, lectures, and presentations. Theater performances, talks, and gatherings take place in the amphitheater. The atrium beneath the flower petals is a windowed, light-filed place for receptions.

The accessible building and grounds are available for rentals. The classroom has zoom and projection capabilities. The atrium can accommodate seating for a presentation, tables for a meeting, or area for receptions. The 75-seat auditorium is a warm, welcoming space for learning and reflecting. The art gallery showcases rotating exhibits of photography, painting, collage, and sculpture. We assist with equipment set-up and tours and an recommend quality local food service.

The Michael Klahr Center is a wonderful venue for gatherings, presentations, and celebrations. If you would like more information, please email us at: info@hhrcmaine.org.
