Organizational Profile

The Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine (HHRC) is a statewide nonprofit dedicated to promoting universal respect for human rights through education and outreach. Grounded in the lessons of the Holocaust and other historical and contemporary events, HHRC engages students, educators, and communities across Maine to reflect on moral responsibility and act against prejudice, discrimination, and injustice.

Founded in 1985 by Holocaust survivor Gerda Haas, HHRC has grown from a small educational initiative into a respected and trusted institution serving communities across the state.  Based at the Michael Klahr Center on the campus of the University of Maine at Augusta, the organization serves as both a physical and intellectual hub for dialogue, learning, and community engagement. 

HHRC’s impact is both deep and far-reaching.  In 2025 alone, the organization delivered programming statewide, reaching more than 3,200 students and nearly 300 educators.  In addition, the organization continued to expand its curriculum with 17 updated and newly developed offerings spanning Holocaust education, anti-bias learning, and human rights.  Central to HHRC’s mission is its unwavering commitment to access: all educational programs are provided free of charge, ensuring that geography and resources are never barriers to participation.

The Opportunity

The Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine is seeking a part-time educator to deliver quality education programming in Holocaust history and human rights. The position is twenty hours a week beginning on November 16, 2026.  Ability to drive to schools and the Michael Klahr Center in Augusta required. Applicants must have reliable transportation, laptop, and reliable internet access. 

Job Responsibilities

●      Participate in training to achieve mastery of HHRC subject matter, curriculum, and materials.

●      Deliver HHRC educational workshops and programs in person and via Zoom to students, teachers, and community groups.

●      Welcome and guide school and community groups at in person visits to the Michael Klahr Center on the UMA campus.

●      Assist in the creation of new HHRC programs.

●      Actively participate in weekly staff meetings and meetings with the Education Coordinator.

●      Assist the Education Coordinator as needed. 

Qualifications

●      Prior teaching experience, preferably with youth.

●      Strong attention to detail and accuracy regarding educational content.

●      Excellent oral and written communication skills.

●      Ability to conduct research in libraries, archives, and online.

●      Demonstrated skills in public speaking.

●      Ability to work well in a collaborative team setting.

●      Willingness to learn.

The HHRC is an equal opportunity employer and offers reimbursement for phone and internet. The hourly rate is $21.87 with earned vacation and sick time.

This position offers flexibility for in-state remote work, with regular travel required for in-person presentations at schools and in communities throughout Maine, as well as at the Michael Klahr Center in Augusta.  The position also requires occasional evening availability for programs and events.
